Endings are Beginnings

How exciting it is to start a New Year with hopes of great things to come.  It gives us the feeling of shutting a door to the past and having a fresh new start.  We try to forget the challenges of the past year and move towards the possibilities ahead.

A number of years ago, I was out with a friend painting a ceramic hanging.  We were trying to decide what to put on the hanging.  As we were brainstorming ideas, we settled on one, “every ending is a new beginning.”   At the time it seemed like a nice thought, but we did not recognize the truth of this phrase.  In fact, it holds an important truth for leaders and others.

While we can be eager to flip the page and close out a year, the underlying principle of our statement is that what we do now prepares the way for what comes next.  If we save our money today, it allows us to pay for unexpected expenses tomorrow.  If we do the work to learn and plan today, it allows us to take advantage of opportunities tomorrow.

Whatever you accomplished last year, the lessons you learned and the relationships you built will impact the future.  In other words, the future is built on the past.  We are not chained to mistakes or errors of the past, but we can use those lessons to avoid them moving forward.  Likewise, the successes of the past are useful lessons of what to repeat and expand upon.

The past is never wasted if we use it to make even wiser decisions moving forward with our new beginnings.   Some of those choices may include being disciplined physically, engaging in good self-care, stretching our minds through learning opportunities, or even maintaining focus on key initiatives.  Whatever area you choose to focus on, remember that you are creating a strong foundation for your next steps of growth.

Consider what steps are needed as you create a great beginning in 2024.  Let’s make wise decisions to plan what we will prioritize in our lives and work, knowing that what we build today will impact our options for tomorrow.
