When we talk about leading a team many people will pick priorities such as creating vision, being influential, and being strategic. These are certainly important responsibilities of a leader. However, when people talk about engaging with team members most will focus on communicating well and praising them. Having difficult conversations is not typically associated with leading team members well.
To lead so that our team members follow, we must show our concern for them. They need to know that we see them as an important part of the team and that their work matters. To do this, we need to both act on their behalf, and address what is holding them back. Addressing issues is an act of concern for their well-being and success. Neglecting issues sets them up to fail, since they may not realize that something they are doing is holding them back. Addressing issues with compassion shows true concern for team members and allows them to strengthen their performance.
When team members hear correction, it does not feel good in the moment. Initially it may be frustrating, but in time, if done well, they will recognize the value and true care we have for them. Especially for those who are talented and committed, they will thrive far more when we provide strong feedback, rather than just hoping they figure it out themselves.
Further, taking a true interest in others also compels us to take action. Taking action includes encouraging them, delegating growth opportunities, opening doors, and providing training to help them excel. When we invest time in them, the team will do their best to fulfill our vision and goals.
Yes, we hold people accountable, but this must be balanced with also wanting what’s best for our team members. Good leaders desire the best for those we lead, and reaching our goals is the by-product of our investment. We focus on investing in people, not just what helps us achieve what we want.
