Happy April Fools Day! This is the day when people pull pranks on each other and then laugh as people fall for them. I had a friend who thought it was funny to turn the volume up on the radio so when I turned it on the music would be painfully loud. Others have changed the time on clocks, or put salt in the sugar bowl. These are minor pranks that do not have long term impact on the way we trust someone.
However, consider the impact if people no longer feel they can trust what you say. If people do not believe you, they will second guess your motives and what you tell them. You will no longer enjoy the benefit of the doubt, rather you will be required to have “proof” or validate what you are saying.
My grandfather loved to do craft projects as gifts for people. He would often be tinkering around in his workshop and need to get some part or item for his project. A short trip to the hardware store to get the needed item would ensue. He was known for picking an item up off the shelf, then waving to the clerk he would tell them to put it on his tab. There was never an issue as they knew within 24-48 hours, he would be back to pay for whatever he picked up. My grandfather took pride in the fact that everyone in town knew they could trust him.
Each of us should consider whether we could tell someone to trust us, and if they would in fact give us the benefit of the doubt. Gaining the trust of others means that we are following through on our commitments and are accountable for our actions. Acknowledging our mistakes or failures allows others on the team to trust us.
Trust is also developed by acting on your values. People believe what you do more than what you say. So, if there is a discrepancy between your words and actions, people will not trust your words or you. They will assume that you have an ulterior motive for what you are saying, which is never good. In fact, when this happens your ability to lead ends and they will begin following others.
