Typically, these are leaders who speak with a quiet, steady voice and choose to walk away from self-service. These are the leaders who become revered for who they are and what they model, more than what they accomplished. In fact, they are willing to sacrifice to uplift and help others.
Based on their focus on helping others, these leaders may be seen as weak or lacking intelligence because they are not always promoting themselves. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, these leaders show great courage and an understanding of the need to build bridges even with people who are adversaries. These leaders rely on guiding principles of integrity, humility, and speaking truth to power. Most often they are learners and stay open to listening and considering the insights of others.
They carry different titles in life. Farmer, teacher, mother, entrepreneur, president, and many others, but what they hold in common is a commitment to making a difference whether it is with many people, or just one. The good news is that each of us can be that leader. It does not require much education, or a certain title, wealth, or fame. Instead, it takes a clear vision of seeing each person as deserving our best, and being intentional in how we build others up and enrich their lives.
We all long to follow someone who cares about our well-being, who wants the best for us and is willing to support and encourage us along the way. The mistake we make is in waiting for someone else to be that person. Instead, leaders need to choose to be that person, to make that difference, to model what could be if we all step forward. We can make a difference, one day and one person at a time.
