Many TV shows, museums, and tourist spots purport to show us the strange and wonderful things in our world. There are often strange looking animals, unexplained happenings, or even acts that are terrifying. Yes, there are plenty of strange things in the universe. Even more surprising is that people are willing to spend money to hear about these things even when their validity may be doubtful!
However, something that is worth investing in is learning about the individuality of each person and their unique approach to situations. For example, when confronted with a challenge, some people tend to shut down while others are ready for a fight. The difference in whether we will overcome a conflict or challenge is not a one size fits all approach. Rather, the best solution comes from our ability to assess our response and employ the best approach possible.
DISC has a tool called Agile EQ which shows eight different approaches or mindsets we can adopt to respond in any situation. Most of us have 2-3 mindsets that we feel most comfortable using. Some prefer a resolute approach that draws a line in the sand and does not move. Others prefer a collaborative approach that seeks to draw the other person out to create a solution. Both approaches have strengths and value depending on the situation.
The key as leaders is to discern which approach will create opportunities for great outcomes and then be willing to adapt. Too often we get stuck in our comfort zone and believe our preferred way is the best for every situation. An attitude of “It’s my way or the highway” has a rigidity that is frustrating to those around us.
The difference between being “strange” or “wonderful” often depends on whether we recognize our natural strengths and tendencies and manage them in such a way that they do not undermine our efforts. Recently, the Detroit Lions played a tight game that they should have won, but instead lost. At the end of the game, Dan Campbell stated that he had made the wrong call, and it cost his team the game. Dan’s self-awareness is so critical because making the wrong call or using the wrong approach can cost our teams. Let’s stay open and evaluate what mindset or approach will create opportunities for success!
