Being passive may be the worst state we can choose. It’s amazing how passivity can spread and invade your life. For example, many people listen passively and do not really hear what someone is telling them. They hear the basic premise, or what they think you are going to say, but miss the deeper message.
Likewise, some people go passively through life. They may attend meetings but not really engage. Or they walk past people without seeing them. They answer questions without really considering what is being asked. In fact, it is possible to go through an entire day just following the routine and not fully engage mentally or emotionally.
When someone expresses they are bored, it is often because they have become passive. Even dining at a great restaurant can become boring if we think of it as just another meal. Being passive is like putting your mind in neutral and letting it go whichever direction the road takes it.
As leaders we often allow our team to flow along and do only what is required of them. They may believe this is acceptable and as long as there are no problems, it’s okay. The reality is that leaders have much to do with whether our team remains passive or becomes passionate.
Leaders who communicate regularly about the purpose behind their work have a higher chance of supervising engaged teams. Being purpose-driven can create energy and a sense of commitment to that vision. When team members understand the desired outcome, they will know how to engage and contribute to reaching those goals.
Likewise, leaders who challenge their teams create energy from providing growth opportunities and creating a standard of excellence to attain. Being excellent does not mean being error free, rather it means striving to do the best work possible. Challenging your team allows them to take pride in their work and accomplishments.
Today is not just another day. It is a gift in which to do great work with your team. Make it worthwhile by engaging fully in your day!
