Leadership is all about engaging. Engaging with our purpose, teams, clients, and communities. Being passive is never a part of a leader’s world. Leadership requires us to initiate and influence others to take action.
In the midst of uncertainty, the natural reaction can be to hesitate, slow down and play it safe. There will always be uncertainty about the economy, or trends, or other unpredictable circumstances. However, that is a part of our world, and if we are going to make progress, we have to initiate and engage.
One such example is Tico Duckett, founder of Duckett Brothers Distributing. In his recent interview on the “Leadership Bits & Bytes Podcast,” Tico talked about how he went out and developed relationships when he was starting his business. He identified prospective clients and has built steadily since then. He now has two businesses and over 100 employees on his team.
Engaging with your purpose daily means asking “How am I moving towards my goal”? We must stay motivated and focused on priorities versus becoming distracted by the urgent tasks of the day. Leaders also need to remind others about the purpose by integrating it into their communication on a regular basis. Tico used the analogy of a rowboat and making sure everyone is rowing in the same direction.
Further, engaging means strategically spending time with key stakeholders. Whether it is a team member, client, or community leader; we must ensure we take time to develop those relationships, communicate our vision, and collaborate. People are the core of leadership, and we must engage with them frequently.
