People often complain that those in charge do not understand their situation, fail to communicate effectively, or make decisions that worsen a problem. They hope for the day when leaders will wake up and see things from their viewpoint, or circumstances will improve.
This mindset puts individuals in a passive, victim-like role. It keeps us stuck, waiting for someone to “fix” whatever is wrong. This thinking prevents progress. The truth is, problems are only solved when we take the initiative and create solutions ourselves.
Imagine the difference it would make if we chose to empower ourselves—to take ownership of our responsibilities, relationships, and challenges. Notice the emphasis on empowering ourselves, rather than waiting for someone else to grant us that power. While we all operate within certain boundaries of authority, there is still so much we can do within those limits.
Leaders are those who empower themselves and others to improve their workplace. If meetings feel too long or unproductive, suggest ways to streamline them. If the company culture feels negative, be the voice that promotes positivity and a focus on solutions. If others are discouraged, offer encouragement and ideas to help the team move forward.
Leaders experience emotions just like everyone else–the difference lies in how they respond. Rather than being overwhelmed by challenges, they focus what they can do to make a difference–and then they act. Waiting for the perfect moment to create change means you may be waiting forever. Instead, identify what can be improved and start making that change right now, right where you are.
When you take action, others will notice. Your example can inspire and empower those around you, multiplying the impact of your leadership.
