If Not This, Then What?

If you’ve ever taken time to observe different forms of art, you’ll notice that much of it reflects real life. Landscapes of lakeshores, waves, forests, animals, and birds serve as beautiful reminders of the world around us. Yet, this kind of art is often bound by the limits of our current reality.

In contrast, some art reimagines what already exists. Take mosaics, for example — these are often made from fragments of broken objects. What once seemed lost or without value becomes something stunning when reassembled in a new way. The beauty lies not in the original form, but in the transformation.

Leaders, like artists, must also see potential in what could be. New beginnings, fresh approaches, and unexplored opportunities often emerge from what first appears broken or uncertain. Yet, it can be difficult to recognize these possibilities when we’re deeply immersed in familiar routines. Innovation is stifled when we cling too tightly to the tried and true.

A powerful question to ask yourself regularly is: “If not this, then what?” Growth begins with asking bold questions – ones that challenge assumptions and open the door to better ways of doing things.

Leadership requires the courage to let go of comfort and reach toward goals that may not have clear answers. When things don’t go as expected, or when something breaks, don’t get stuck. Instead, create space to imagine what could be.

Challenges are inevitable – in life and in work. The real question is: What will you create from the golden fragments at your disposal? What emerges may surprise you with truly amazing results.
