Organizational Alignment: The Key to Building High-Performing, Effective Teams

The Impact of Misalignment

If you have ever been driving down the road and feel your car veering more to the right or left when you are stopping, you know the difference alignment or misalignment can bring. In the same way, misalignment affects not just how smoothly you are able to stop, but also how effectively all the parts in your car are able to work together.

Similarly, misalignment in a team is inefficient and counterproductive. It causes a team to experience more conflict, more errors, and to become highly ineffective and inefficient since there is increased friction over the right solution. As a result, conflicts take longer to resolve because team members have different views on their goals, decision-making, and priorities.

The Power of Organizational Alignment

Alignment in organizations is critical to a high-functioning team. It allows each member of the team to provide their unique contribution, delivered in a way that helps the whole team become more productive. Furthermore, alignment provides insight into the importance of the overarching goal and creates a common understanding of how the team will address issues and make decisions.

Organizational Alignment allows each team member to succeed because they understand their role in reaching goals and how best to anticipate needs. This process reduces the need to restructure, minimizes errors, and decreases conflict or issues caused by unclear expectations regarding each person’s assignment. Alignment is key to strong teams and sustainable organizations.

Alignment Requires Intentional Leadership

However, alignment does not simply happen. Leaders must model alignment and create clear expectations for systems and processes. Only when team members are clear on expectations can they advance toward excellence.

Leaders cannot assume that team members who heard them talk about expectations a year ago still remember them today. Instead, leaders must continuously communicate about the goals, the priorities needed to reach those goals, and how each person or department fits into the team’s ability to achieve them.

Evaluating Your Organizational Alignment

Misalignment happens naturally, but alignment takes time, focus, and prioritization to accomplish.

Evaluate your effectiveness in modeling and communicating your purpose and goals by reviewing your meetings, emails, and other connections with team members. What has been the most prevalent topic you have discussed? If your discussions are not consistently centered on your key objectives, it may be time to rethink your key objectives — or your alignment.
