Why Complaining Prevents Progress in Leadership and Team Culture

Complaints About Everyday Challenges

Over the past few months, most of us have complained about the weather. It’s too cold, not enough sun, wet, icy, slippery, and the list goes on. These complaints many times are followed by comments on how bad the roads are, the potholes that are emerging, and more. Complaining seems to have become a constant.

Complaints are a natural way of expressing our frustration when reality does not meet up with our expectations. Team members often feel better when venting their frustrations. However, there are some drawbacks when we default to complaining on a regular basis.

Complaining Keeps Teams Focused on Problems Instead of Solutions

For example, one issue with complaining is that it keeps us focused on the problem rather than considering the solution. Leaders and team members alike can become engrossed with what is wrong in a situation and progress becomes stagnated. Certainly, no one wants to face challenges, but the issues we face should never define our work or ability to progress.

Challenges Create Opportunities for Innovation

The challenges we face simply provide an opportunity to rethink our approach, process, or direction. It is through needing to innovate and find new solutions that we can make progress. Doing so requires that we let go of the problem and seek options that will move us forward towards our goals.

The Emotional Impact of Constant Complaining

Another way in which complaints hinder us is that complaining is draining emotionally. By the time someone stops complaining, their energy and outlook are depressed as well as those who listened to their complaints. No one gets inspired by continuous negativity, that only produces stagnation and worry.

How Leaders Can Redirect Negative Team Communication

Successful leaders listen carefully to their team’s communication and monitor demoralizing thoughts. Interjecting hope, creativity, and momentum will make a tremendous difference towards mobilizing your team towards progress. Positive words and attitudes do not just happen but rather must be sparked on a regular basis.

Turning Challenges Into Progress

Consider your communication and meetings with others. What have you emphasized? This does not mean that we are not honest about challenges. Instead, strong leaders use challenges as an opportunity to innovate, create new energy, and to realign the team. Instead of complaining, let’s invest our time in finding ways to make progress.
