Innovation in Leadership: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities for Growth

Introduction: Efficiency Alone Does Not Create Innovation

Most people try to master their work and processes to obtain maximum efficiency. The goal is to keep things running smoothly, without mistakes, and to complete tasks as soon as possible. Then, they begin again to do the same things, the same ways. While this approach brings about efficiency, it does not create innovation.

Innovation Often Emerges From Challenges

Instead, innovation and new ideas often comes from experiences where things do not go smoothly and where we achieve unexpected results. In fact, innovation is spurred forward when we encounter obstacles that require us to reconsider our approach. Additionally, mistakes and a lack of results often push us toward rethinking what we know.

Viewing Obstacles as Opportunities to Innovate

Therefore, when we view obstacles as a sign that we need to innovate rather than as failure, it allows us to move forward more effectively. For example, sometimes we need to change based on the growth we are experiencing, changing market needs, or new information in our field. However, resisting change and innovation keeps us fixated on the problem and prevents our teams from thriving.

The Leader’s Role in Encouraging Innovation

As a result, leaders can either encourage innovation or discourage team members from considering anything new. Asking ourselves and others “What’s New?” on a regular basis helps create an expectation that innovation is positive and expected. Moreover, basing decisions and practices on the same information does not bring about progress. What worked well five years ago does not mean it will work today.

Balancing Past Success, Present Reality, and Future Needs

Ultimately, leaders understand the need to build on the best practices of yesterday, evaluate based on the reality of today, and innovate based on the needs of tomorrow. Leaders must reflect all three in their decision-making for long-term success. This balance provides stability and ensures we are not ignoring key information.

Using Reflection as a Road Map for Future Success

Finally, reflecting on what fueled past success, what needs have emerged, and what trends are appearing provides a road map to future success. Therefore, take time now to identify this critical information and use it as a compass moving forward.
