Leadership Priorities: Stop Procrastinating and Maximize Your Impact
We have many good things that we could prioritize as leaders. We could prioritize increasing profits, providing more products or services, hiring more people, mentoring others, and the list goes on. Sometimes we worry that if we don’t accomplish it all, we will fail. In reality, if we prioritize everything, then nothing is truly important.
Being Busy Isn’t the Same as Being Effective
Why are we as leaders tempted to fill our days with activity? One reason is that it allows us to say, “I’m just too busy right now, I’ll get to that later.” We can procrastinate on difficult tasks and focus on more pleasant duties that allow us to check off the boxes and feel productive.
However, focusing on the quick and simple tasks rarely creates meaningful momentum. Growth comes from tackling the work that matters most, not simply completing what’s easiest.
The Cost of Avoiding Difficult Decisions
At times, we procrastinate because the decision we need to make may not be popular. As leaders, we naturally want others to like us, and we may avoid the difficult conversations that need to happen.
However, it is impossible to make everyone happy. Leadership requires making the right decisions for the right reasons and with the right outcomes in mind.
Establishing the right priorities means making a conscious choice about how we will influence and impact those around us.
Purpose Creates Priorities
Some leaders struggle to set priorities because they lack a clear mission or purpose. They work simply to earn a paycheck or stay busy, but they lack the passion and energy needed to tackle significant projects and complex challenges.
Great leaders stretch themselves. They challenge their teams to pursue work that is not merely convenient or comfortable, but meaningful, memorable, and life-giving.
Choose Impact Over Maintenance
Our highest priorities should create energy and excitement around accomplishing important work. They should inspire team members to engage fully and pursue excellence.
Setting priorities also develops greater self-awareness and strengthens our ability to work interdependently with others. As we consistently focus on what matters most, a small spark becomes a lasting flame that fuels our leadership and influences those around us.
