The ideal leader is often described as someone who embodies certain characteristics and personality styles which they feel is required. The view is that all leaders should exhibit these traits and personality if they are going to have amazing teams and reach their goals. By asserting that leaders should be alike, they are leaving out a sizable group of people who do not fit.
Leaders actually come in all shapes and sizes and can still be highly effective. Some will be more outgoing, or reserved, some will use communication to inspire others, while others will model the way to serve others. Sure there are skills and core principles which are extremely important for a leader to possess, but style and characteristics can be more flexible.
For example, I know a leader who is more introverted and is growing their organization in a well planned manner. This method is working well and they are growing rapidly. There are other leaders I know who have been very outspoken and inspirational in their style. They initiate and make strides to act on what they know needs to happen next. These leaders also are successful but approach their role in different ways.
So what does matter most in leadership? It requires being true to your values and purpose. Knowing your company’s mission shapes your work, your decisions, and your priorities. It identifies who your ideal client will be and allows you to determine which products and services to offer.
Knowing your values defines how you will serve others, who will be strong team players for you, and the impact you will have through your work. Values define who we are and therefore help shape our culture. People will identify not only with what you do but how you do it.
Our differences as leaders are strengths that lend uniqueness to the core of leadership. Each leader must identify their purpose, align their team around their vision, and implement their strategy. How we accomplish those leadership responsibilities will vary and allow our workplace and community to thrive.
