Recently I was in a virtual meeting and our Internet connection went down. Everything stopped working and we had to reboot the system in order to reconnect. It was frustrating to not be able to communicate and simply wait for the system to come back online.
This principle plays out in other ways within the workplace. Not only do we need a reliable Internet connection, but we must stay connected to our clients. There can be a temptation to assume that our relationships with our clients are still strong even if we haven’t been in touch recently. This is especially true for those you have served for some time. But is it true?
We need to stay connected so we know how our clients are adapting, what new goals they are setting and how we can support them effectively. Failure to do so will result in a weak relationship and potentially losing clients. Further, it will hinder our ability to create new and innovative solutions to meet those emerging needs.
We also need to stay connected with our team members. We can get so busy that we lose touch with their challenges and needs. Retaining team members should be a priority and requires regular interaction on our part. Also, being connected to your team members will supply information on new ideas that could be critical to your success.
Staying connected to emerging trends is also critical. Relying on knowledge or methods of the past will limit our success since trends are changing at a fast clip. Remaining current allows us to provide solutions proactively and prevent issues from occurring.
Last, but not least, we must continue to be connected to our values. Values need to be reinforced and practiced. Whether it is hiring new team members, making decisions, or creating solutions, we must act while keeping our values in mind. Our values and purpose should be our north star to guide us and will ensure we are on the right path.
