The arrival of fall has brought beautiful colors to the trees, cooler weather, and lots of preparation for winter ahead. From raking leaves, to tuning up your furnace, to cleaning up flower beds, there is a lot to do. While we love the football games and festivals that are happening, we sometimes focus on the work that lies ahead instead of enjoying the fun.
For example, some people allow the additional work to be draining and cause for complaints about our extra-long to-do list. Our backs may ache from yardwork, the days are shorter, and we dread the snowy days ahead. If we focus on all of these challenges, it will inevitably lead to a more negative attitude.
Strong leaders know how to tune in to the right things. They understand that while the short term includes work, there are still things to enjoy in the present and there will be great results in the future. Leaders tune into the benefits of doing hard things and taking risks. This ability to tune in produces a positive attitude even in the midst of challenges.
Leaders also know that to obtain the benefits, you have to be tuned up. Every fall, sports teams prepare for games where they need to play at their best. There are pre-season camps, practices throughout the season and work that each athlete does on their own as well. Each team member works hard to prepare, knowing that the results of their work will show up during the game.
The same principle of tuning up is true for leaders as well. Stretching their ability to communicate, setting good priorities, and investing in those they lead prepares themselves and their teams to succeed. Leaders cannot perform well under pressure unless they have worked on their ability to make great decisions, engage their teams, and to be strategic in their planning.
Tuning into positive and constructive thoughts, as well as preparing ourselves and our teams to perform are essential steps. Otherwise, like our furnace or car, they will break down. Let’s remember to tune in and tune up!
