Tis the Season…

‘Tis the season to be curious and create new approaches!

Studies show that most people have a routine they follow.  This can include getting up at a certain time, following the same route to work, and beginning the day in the same way.  Routines can save us from a myriad of small decisions daily. However, sometimes routines can get in the way of new experiences or fresh approaches to the projects we are tackling.  Our thoughts tend to be centered on completing something quickly rather than approaching it with thoughts of “What if…”

Bringing a sense of curiosity to our work has numerous benefits. Accomplishing something differently can bring fresh energy and creativity to a project that otherwise would be routine and not very noteworthy.  The challenge for most of us is to get into a more creative mindset.

Try this exercise to think more creatively.  Assume that your normal approach to a task will not work and you must choose a new way.  Then consider what would make the completion of this task even more valuable than normal.  How could you accomplish it in a way that would produce greater impact?

For example, consider a tree and identify all its attributes.  It is rough on the outside, grows, helps clean the air, can be used to make many things and adds beauty to the landscape.  Now compare those attributes to your business and see what similarities or differences you observe.

Perhaps the rough exterior might be practices that are not customer friendly, or the difficulty your customer service department experiences when interacting with a highly competitive market.  Its growth can correspond to your company and team growth.  Cleaning the air could represent the benefits you provide to your customers that keep them healthy. Being used for many things may represent your diverse and customizable services.

From this simple exercise, you begin to see things differently and appreciate your organization in new ways.  Comparing an object to a project or goal you have will similarly provide new insights that might spark new approaches.   Begin today to think creatively and experience the adventure of the possibilities around you!
