Tis the season to be jolly…or not. For many people this season is difficult being surrounded by all the music, decorations and special events, knowing there is an expectation to be upbeat and happy. Those who have recently lost a loved one or are facing an illness, or some other difficult issue, it feels even more stressful to act as though we are enjoying the holidays.
As leaders it is important to be aware of these challenges and to allow people space to participate in the holidays in a way that fits their needs. Even financial pressure is felt more heavily when there are Secret Santa events, food to bring to parties, and requests for supporting people in need. Being careful to make these things optional and allowing team members to decline discretely is key.
One leader has taken the challenges some people face at the holidays and year-round to heart and started a business called HourGlass Testing Solutions. Andrea Owens understands the challenges of drug and alcohol addiction, especially at a time of year when alcohol is frequently served at parties and gatherings. Andrea provides drug and alcohol testing and education for companies. Her goal is for people who struggle to be treated with respect and for employers to create a recovery-friendly workspace. To learn more about Andrea and her business, you will want to listen to our latest Leadership Bits & Bytes podcast episode. Her insights into drug testing go much further than just completing a lab test!
This holiday season let’s be aware of the challenges many are facing and allow team members to engage when and how they prefer.
