Tis the Season to Be…

Christmas morning children can be found rushing downstairs and peeking under the tree.  Their eyes are bright, and they are anticipating what could be in the boxes giftwrapped for them. The excitement in the air is felt by all. Both the person giving and receiving the gift are savoring the moment.

Suddenly there is chaos as gifts are opened. There are items to put together and games to play. Goodies are enjoyed throughout the day, and we connect with relatives we might not have seen for a bit.  For some the day will be draining, while others will be energized and inspired by all the activity.

Likewise, when we think about a new year, we often are excited by the possibilities of what it may hold.  Some of us are tired from overcoming obstacles in the past year and ready for a new start.  Others are a bit fearful of what lies ahead and may prefer to ignore the New Year and just coast forward.

Whatever the current year has brought, as leaders we need to step back and renew our vision in anticipation of a New Year. It is important to possess that same anticipation and joy at what is possible as when you receive gifts. Setting our minds on a renewed vision provides meaning not only for ourselves, but also for our team, which will be instrumental in implementing that vision.

Having a vision is about creating a clear picture of our dreams, of identifying what is possible if we work together.  As you approach the New Year, let’s not just turn the page. Let’s solidify a clear vision of the possibilities that lie ahead for our teams.  To be sure, there will be strategy, work, and challenges in fulfilling your vision.  However, vision gives meaning and purpose to everything we do and inspires our efforts.
