Agility & Pivoting in Leadership

You get what seems like a great idea and start sharing it only to have someone express an objection.  It can feel like the air has just gone out of your balloon, and you may start to question the value of your idea.  You might even consider giving up before giving your idea a fair a chance.

However, there are some strategies that can help you consider others’ feedback realistically.

First, listen to their concern and see if there is a valid point to their perspective.  If so, use that information to improve your idea.  Every new idea will have some counterpoints or flaws, but that doesn’t mean that you have to abandon it entirely.

A key to listening well is adapting your mindset to better respond in various situations.  For example, switching from a resolute mindset to a collaborative or compassionate mindset can lead to greater understanding and better communication.  DiSC’s Agile EQ can be a great tool for learning how to be resilient and highly effective in diverse situations.

Once you have listened and decided how to best proceed, then take action.  Leading means you won’t get everyone on board, but you must make decisions in the team’s best interest.  When you act on what you believe is the right thing, people will respect your decision and follow.

The key isnot to allow flaws or obstacles to prevent you from taking action.  It’s important to consider whether those concerns are significant enough to require changes to your plan.  Sometimes you may need to re-evaluate your decision.  However, leaders can adapt, adjust their strategy, and continue moving towards their objectives.
