As December winds down, holiday celebrations are in full swing, and many are taking time off. As I talk with leaders, many express hope that the New Year is better than the last. Amazingly, that is where it stops: simply hoping that they will be lucky in growing their business and that problems will disappear.
But hope alone isn’t a strategy. The leaders who consistently achieve great outcomes don’t rely on luck — they plan and prioritize. While others slow down, they invest time in envisioning next steps, creating strategic plans, and making key decisions that set the stage for success.
Year-end is the perfect time to do the same. If planning doesn’t come naturally, start with these questions:
- If we had a great year, what would that look like? What would we have accomplished?
- Are these goals truly important to us and our team? Will they inspire commitment?
- What steps must we take to make these priorities a reality?
- What skills or knowledge does our team need to succeed and sustain growth?
- What obstacles could stand in our way, and how can we overcome them?
- What fears or negativity might hold us back from reaching our potential?
Answering these questions brings clarity and direction. Don’t just hope for improvement – invest time now to create impact for yourself and your team in the new year ahead.
