Great Leaders’ Secrets

We host a leadership podcast called “Leadership Bits & Bytes” that highlights exceptional leaders across West Michigan. Our goal is to share stories of successful leaders and organizations, offering insights that can help others strengthen their leadership skills. There’s tremendous wisdom to be gained from listening to the experiences of others.

Over the years, I’ve often been asked: What are the keys to being a strong leader? There are several principles I share with leaders I coach. For example:

  • Inspire and build trust. Strong leaders understand their team members’ motivations and personalities. They challenge them appropriately to grow while fostering trust and confidence.
  • Provide clarity of expectations. Team members need to know what’s expected of them, the boundaries they operate within, and how their role contributes to the organization’s success. Clear expectations are critical for engagement and retention.
  • Offer feedback, recognition, and support. Talented professionals don’t need hand-holding, but they do need communication about their performance. They thrive when supervisors relate to them as whole people and focus on what they need to succeed.

These keys don’t require a big budget or a crystal ball. You can learn a lot simply by listening to your team’s insights and questions. Regularly ask how they’re doing and what you can do to support them. Investing in your team is one of the best ways to help your organization grow.

Finally, these practices can’t be occasional or “when you think of it.” They must be a consistent priority. When you make them part of your leadership approach, your team will thrive, crises will be minimized, and you’ll establish patterns that make you a truly great leader.
